HISTORY OF CHIEF
FIRE EQUIPMENT AND SERVICE CO.
In July, 1965, a married couple
Eugene and Louise decided to open a business of sales and service of portable
fire extinguishers. There were many concerns having a family of three children
and mortgage payments. However, their hard work and perseverance pushed through
the closing doors and jumped the hurdles that appeared from nowhere.
The business started in a house and
moved to a building located at 269 Main Street, Lodi,
New Jersey. Since 1970, the company has operated at this location.
The years passed and the company
needed to grow, we purchased several machines.
CoTwo Receiver tank, hydrostatic testing apparatus, nitrogen tanks, regulators,
dry chemical refilling, and etc. The company applied and received D.O.T. licensing,
which was Bureau of mines and explosives at that time.
Through the years there were several
flooding disasters. The building was under water many times, but the worst were
the years of 1971, 1977, 1984, 2007, 2011.
The water rose from 4 feet to 5 feet inside the building. The 1984 flood
caused the company to work out of trailers for a year till the building was
rebuilt. However, the family's theme of hard work and perseverance took over.
With the help of family and friends the business continued to survive.
Chief has employed children,
grandchildren, brothers, nephews, and friends in the past years. This gave the
company a unified family working atmosphere. Eugene Morabito always said
"WE" not "I" did the work. There is no "I" in
team! Still today that is the company's
policy and all employed is considered Chief’s family.
In 1971 their son and his wife
started working for Chief as employees learning the business. Together as the
years went on the son, father and employees worked on the growth of the
company. Now, we have achieved 6-licenses in the state of New Jersey for
servicing the state. Our sales and
services have expanded from fire extinguishers to hydrostatic testing of
several type cylinders (scuba, paint ball, beverage, SCBA cylinders),
industrial dry chemical systems, kitchen wet chemical systems, fire sprinkler
systems (wet or dry), backflow devices, and looking forward to the future.
The company has 8 vehicles, and 14
employees to help in the servicing of our customers. We thank our customers for
their support and loyalty over the past 50 years.
